Homeless Encampment - 6th Street Sept 2017

Community Meeting: Thurs., 9/28, 6pm – Homeless Encampment Cleanup Pilot Program

Starting in September 2017, the City of Santa Rosa will actively engage with the occupants of the encampment at the 6th Street Highway 101 Underpass (6th Street underpass) to offer housing options and services to the estimated 40 – 50 people staying nightly. The City is continuing the pilot program recently completed at the homeless encampment at the Farmers Lane Extension and expanding to other encampments throughout Santa Rosa, to address the health, safety and shelter needs of persons experiencing homelessness. The program at the 6th Street underpass also includes a plan to mitigate impacts of the encampment to the surrounding community by clearing the site and storm drain inlets of trash and debris, as well as other threats to public health and safety, and working with property owners to address issues at an abandoned house near the encampment site, once occupants have been provided services, shelter, and housing.

In order to provide information about the pilot program and answer questions, the City will hold an informational community meeting on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 6:00-7:30 PM at the DeTurk Round Barn, located at 819 Donahue Street, Santa Rosa. Residents and businesses from the neighborhoods surrounding the encampment are encouraged to come. City staff from Police, Fire, Housing and Community Services, Transportation and Public Works, and Community Engagement will be on hand to answer questions.

For information regarding the pilot program at the Highway 101 6th Street Underpass, Farmers Lane Extension, the City’s Housing First Strategy, the September 28, 2017 community meeting, and updates on other City efforts, please visit the Homelessness Solutions webpage at: www.srcity.org/HomelessSolutions.
